Cross training

It was a cross training day today, so I went to the fitness center and hopped on the strider/elliptical. Wow, what a way to work up a sweat! I think I have to ramp up my running a bit because I can’t remember sweating like that during a run. Only one little problem: my form must have been wrong. I have quite a bit of soreness in the small of my back now.

Finished off with a protein shake, mixing protein powder, a bit of milk, vanilla yogurt and a banana. Now I feel full to bursting. Hope it lasts for longer than an hour.

btw, the strider said I’d gone 2.4 miles in 30 minutes, burning 260 calories. I kept on, well, striding for about ten minutes more and then ran a couple of laps on the track.

7K = 47:15

What John Stanton refers to as a “slow easy run”. Run 10, walk one. It was a struggle at times. Music kept me going, plus I was breaking it down in increments like: by the time you get to that tree up there it’ll be 4K, only 3 more to go… keep up to the rhythm of this song (made me speed it up a bit) … just another 45 seconds, see how fast you can go … stuff like that.

Still have hamstring issues on right side. I foam rolled after, and now I’m going to get out The Stick. Ice? Heat? I usually go “ice” after a run, but something is telling me this one needs heat.

After registering for the Half in Saskatoon in August, I discovered there’s a 10K in June that I’d love to do even more because it’s right around the university area which I am most familiar with. (I know, with which I am most familiar…) I could do both, couldn’t I. But it’s a five-hour drive one way.
I’m thinking on it for awhile. It would so fit into my training schedule.

3 hard K

I couldn’t get out to run first thing this morning so I spent a good deal of the day putting it off. But I read some inspirational comments on Tumblr and it worked — I was inspired. But it wasn’t a nice run at all.

First, the wind was blowing crazy strong and crazy cold. I couldn’t catch my breath. I think it also had something to do with the cold I’m fighting off. I’m not congested because of the Sinutab-type meds I’ve been taking lately, but my chest feels tight, I keep gasping for breath, and my lungs don’t seem to be able to fill up.

I was forcing myself for more than ten minutes till I started to feel like I could find some enjoyment in running. But even then it wasn’t much.

But hey — I did it, ran my required kms and I’ve feel good about that.

4K

As per sked . I did the first two km in 13:10 and the last two in 13:20. A bit of tightness in my right hamstring and calf; I have a massage this aft so I’m sure he’ll tell me what I’m doing wrong.

River Run Classic

I just registered for the River Run Classic in Saskatoon, and today was my first day of training. An easy 7K run in 47:15. I keep telling myself I love to get out there and run just for the sake of running, but I seem to perform better (as in, more consistently and with greater determination/dedication) when I have a specific goal to shoot for.

10 things you didn't know . . .

Tag! you’re it! The rules are to state 10 random facts about yourself. Then, go to ten blogs and tell them that they are it. Boom.

1. I rolled a car a few years back. Slipped on a patch of ice, over-corrected, ended up in a snow-covered field. Oddly enough, some Coke bottles in a box in the back seat did not move.

2. I raised Doberman pinschers for a few years.

3. I skipped third grade, except for the math. GeeZUZ, the math!

4. When I’m not offended by it, I find politics interesting.

5. “Reality shows” annoy me because, well, they’re not really real, are they.

6. I have worn glasses since fifth grade.

7. My favorite color is green. Used to be the minty shades, but now I seem to prefer jade/aqua/seaweed — that part of the spectrum.

8. When I was a kid I phoned the local fire hall, because I was curious to see how they’d answer the phone. Like if they’d be cool, — or scream excitedly, demanding the nature of my problem (I thot this would be the more likely scenario). I hung up as soon as I heard a voice on the other end. No one ever found out.

9. I think Dora the Explorer is a know-it-all, and Diego is one seriously conceited, patronizing kid.

10. I know for sure, that when you get older, you don’t know better. Wisdom is a crap shoot. I know this because I AM old. But that doesn’t stop me from offering the occasional tidbit of wisdom:

… if you ever think you’re getting too old to do something, well, you’re not. Another bit of advice: Don’t be still obsessing about your body image/weight when you’re my age. It seems kind of stupid, but still, that doesn’t stop me from doing it.

I wanted to do something really different when I turned 60, so I started running. Been running for three years. Yes, I’m 63.

There, how’s that for a post? Do I seriously have to go to ten blogs and tell THEM they too are tagged? Maybe, after a nap. :-)

Regrouping

Yikes. I haven’t run since my 5K April 7 with the North Derbyshire Running Club in Chesterfield, UK. I’m still decompressing from the 24-hr trip home plus I’m getting all the shiz ready to go back to my summer home. Alberta. Six months or so. The longer I stay here in AZ, the harder it is to leave.

So I’ve been fighting a bit of a bout of depression, and comforting myself with waaaay too many carbs, as evidenced in the uncomfortable tightness of my waistbands. For the record, I’m up six pounds.

I feel ungrounded, unhappy, restless, irritable, at loose ends. Reading Ben’s blog yesterday reflected my feelings exactly. Helps to know I’m not alone. And I know that thru Tumblr I will get back on track. I know it with certainty. Next time I write it might be from north of the 49th parallel. Or I might just get out and pound out a few kms tomorrow or the next day, yeah, that’s what I’ll do — one last run in the land of the sun. I’ll keep you posted.
