the Present Moment
I really must learn to live in the present moment.
Today I went for my physio. My pinched nerve area is feeling a bit better, at least I can walk now, but obviously I still have a ways to go.
Physio: Have you ever been on a treadmill before?
Me: (wanting to say: Yeah, only for thousands of miles!) Yes,
Physio: (pushing buttons etc) Okay, we’ll start you walking at 2.3. Is that too fast?...
On the mend
I love physiotherapists! He poked and prodded and twisted me like a pretzel — and I can stand erect now for the first time in two weeks! More work is scheduled; I see him again in two days.
Funny, during the assessment he asked me if I lived a a very active life. “I am a runner,” I responded. “I’m training for a half marathon in August.” And then damned if I...
Feeling restless
The sun is shining brilliantly, there is scarcely a whiff of wind, the menacing Canada geese have gone, oh, I dunno, somewhere further north I guess, and it is a perfect day for running!
Except. Except for my sore hip. A week ago I couldn’t walk, today I move hunched over and limping, telling myself I am getting better and better. And when I do, when I do, I will get out there and run....
A glitch in the plan
May is turning out to be the Month I Didn’t Run. It started out okay, I ran 25K in the first ten days and I went for a 15K bike ride. Plus I “swam” 12 lengths. I use Qmarks because it was more of a splashing, flutter-board-kicking, side stroke, breast stroke kind of thing, just to get from one end to the other. I sure did expend a lot of energy doing so, but my form was crappy....
Waiting, waiting . . .
I see there are a few other Tumblrs on the injured list, waiting to heal enough to get out there and pound the pavement/grass/trails again. Waiting sure is hard! On my way to a medical appointment yesterday, I saw a woman running along on MY lake path, and I felt both jealous and sad (that it was her out there not me), yet happy and relieved (because seeing her excited me — shall I re-word...
michaeldoeslife:
I’ve made drastic changes in my life over the past year, but I’m still not where I want to be and the better I get, the better I want. I’m coming to recognize the nagging unhappiness as a good thing. It is a motivation to do better, be better.
I don’t care for the term “nagging unhappiness” but that really says it, doesn’t it. I can relate!
Bit of a setback
So. I was hauling kids around on my hip for three days, jumping on a trampoline, pushing a stroller with a heavy load — you know, cross-training stuff — and sitting for loooong periods of time in an uncomfortable truck seat & bouncing around, sleeping on a mattress that was way too soft. Whatever it was I did, or combination of things, I have some kind of unbelievable hip pain. In...
How a three- year-old views a treadmill.

Under the influence
Today I just proved to myself how much the Tumblr community influences me. I posted about traveling and being undecided about exercise. Outing myself like that, I felt I HAD to do something.
In the past I would have moped a bit and told myself how disappointed I was that I was unable to run. But I remembered several Tumblr messages, the most dominant being runningwithaltitude posting a picture...
Swimming: Lesson One
Well, Michaeldoeslife is right: I was ravenous. And I can see why. For nearly an hour I was moving non-stop. No wonder I worked up an appetite! I figure by the time I went back and forth, forth and back trying various positions, I did 12 laps. Yes!
,
I don’t like water in my ears, so I asked Mike (instructor, looked vaguely familiar — I may have taught him in kindergarten once when I...
Half done
I’m half done today’s workout(s). I did my 4K run in 26:26, followed it up with some walking and part of a “high octane workout” from the May Fitness magazine. I say “half done” because this afternoon is my swimming lesson.
Monday was a cross-training day, but I had to do some physical labor instead — painting the deck and assorted other tasks. I was...
swimming??
So I phoned up the swimming pool to sign up for an adult evening learn-to-swim class.
The girl said, “Um, that class is cancelled. Nobody signed up.”
Now what? I wondered. Undaunted, encouraged by various Tumblr posts, I asked her how I could learn a proper swimming stroke.
“Do you swim? at all?” she queried.
My response was self-effacing as usual, I mean, why say...
michaeldoeslife asked: I can't wait to hear about your lessons! Have you ever swam before? The biggest thing I didn't know was to exhale the entire time you are under water. A lot of people just breathe to one side, but our coaches in Tri101 said it is better to breathe bilaterally, so every 3rd stroke. It actually feels more balanced and natural for me to do it that way.
Nothing to fear
The Canada goose, so majestic, so regal, so revered? And, might I add, having such a g*ddam SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT!
See these nice geese, snoozing and sunning themselves? How peaceful. But look at the guy (I’m sure it’s a male) up in the left corner, stretching his neck out and looking all alert, and, if you get closer, menacing!
This is the time of year when my favorite running...
Long slow distance run
7K = 48:30
A few times during the run I was thinking, holy crap I have to do THREE TIMES this much for my Half! It felt kinda hard at times, but I just read lindsaydoeslife’s comments about the Lincoln Half, and yes, we run. Successfully we run, even tho we may feel ill-prepared. I recall running the Lost Dutchman Half in February and not stopping, so I totally know how you feel, Lindsay!...
update
Since it’s approaching the first anniv of this little blog, I thot I’d update some info.
I mostly blog about running because that’s my focus, but there are a few other issues, including weight fluctuations, that I comment on.
I started running in June 2008. The first lap around the running track left me breathless, and doubtful about ever becoming a runner. A month later I...
Expect the unexpected
On my recent trip to England, I came across an interesting bit of history: the Chesterfield church spire. Seems someone decided to build an impressive spire on a church tower about 800 years ago. A grand project that would honor God and capture the attention and respect, ultimately, of millions.
But as you can see in the photo, the spire looks more like an onion set, or a Dairy Queen ice...
Glad I ran
4K = 26:12
I’m glad I ran this morning, because the wind really came up and it’s clouding over now.
I was over-dressed, as usual,
almost went back to get a jacket or something, but after a few minutes I was finding my long sleeved shirt too warm!
My 3K time was 19:42. I gotta say, it weighs heavy on me, @Danielleruns challenge to do a sub-30 5K. But it keeps me honest, and...
Found my shoes!
Yesterday the sked called for a 4K run, so I got dressed in my running clothes, strapped on my Garmin, filled my water bottle, and then went to put on my Mizunos. But….
They were nowhere to be found. In a panic, I looked thru every closet, upstairs, downstairs, checked the car, all the while trying to re-enact yesterday’s events… Long story short, I drove madly over to the...
