Training
ARRGH. I am supposed to be in Week 10 of training for my Half. I should have run 16K today for my long run, ten miles. I should have run 35K total last week. Oh lordy. I guess I shouldn’t have looked at my calendar. Makes it all seem so surreal, like I have never been a runner. Healing, hurry up!

Feeling the pain
I woke up stiff and sore this morning, and I’ve kinda been that way all day long. What a welcome feeling that is! Instead of just nerve pain, I’m now feeling MUSCLE pain! Must be the static and dynamic lunges and the crossovers the physical therapist gave me to do. I was missing that feeling of sore, stiff muscles after a good long run. I’m getting back to it, slowly but surely.

Visiting the physiotherapist
Today’s workout: I began with an 8-minute walk on the treadmill, at an incline of “8”. With every minute that passed, I increased the incline so that by the eighth minute I was walking at an incline of “15”. I could really feel it in my calves! My sore leg objected with occasional stabs of pain, but nothing bad enough to make me stop. This was followed by doing some...

A year
It’s been a year now since I started this blog. What an adventure it’s been! Even tho I’ve only met three of you in person (Ben, Pa and Lauracait) I still feel close to many of you. And I know that some day I will be meeting you in person and sharing your enthusiasm for running. I started because I wanted to follow other Do Lifers, and share my running stories. I’ve run...

Frozen grapes
This is a really good snack, and the fact that they are chewy or crunchy makes them even better. (Takes longer and more effort to eat them.) I’ve read that grapes are not an ideal fruit, containing sugar but not much nutritional value. I still think they make a good snack. Altho these ones look like they were around for awhile before I froze them.

Attitude
I have to do really repetitive stuff. Do “this” 10 times each side for 3 seconds, 5 seconds whatever. So instead of going 1 2 3, 2 2 3, 3 2 3, I started to use my fingers, of which there are conveniently TEN, for counting, and I say, “I am strong and my body is healthy” over and over again — like I believe it. Hope it works.

Almost like running
I have been finding my rehab exercises terribly boring, so I decided to make a change. Now I prepare for it like I’m going for a run. Put on my running clothes, lace up my shoes, get a bottle of water and some tunes, and there I go. Only instead of out the door I go downstairs to the treadmill (for my 10 minute warm-up!). And then I go to the mat and do all of the other exercises for 40...

Almost half a mile
Today’s challenge: Walk on treadmill for 10 min. Which I did, and it showed .46 of a mile. Ouch. The rest of the rehab stuff went well enough, I guess. I did it and I’m feeling stronger. Less hip & leg pain. Quite a bit less, actually! The exercises the physical therapist gave me are repetitive and boring, so I do them to music. Who pulled me through today’s workout? Adele...

Swimming
So I went to the pool to get a good buoyant workout. I strapped on a flotation belt and took a lane, but as soon as I started my right leg began to hurt, with a sharp pain running from my right buttock to my knee to my ankle. I wonder, should I stay or should I go? I went to a lot of trouble to get there, thought I, so I’m NOT going HOME yet! (Actually, I just hopped in the car and drove...

My routine
I like to run in the morning, but I need to eat first. One slice of toast w/pb and honey, and a banana with some peanut butter on it, and two cups of coffee (right or wrong). Then I wait an hour. I check my route and mileage, and put on my gear. I’ve acquired quite a variety of pants and tops in the past four years, so it’s always fun to getting into my running clothes. I put on the...

Accupressure?
I saw a physiotherapist again today, then went for a massage. The MT did some accupressure on me. I don’t know how to evaluate that, but it seems the pain is much less severe and more generalized. And running again seems more probable; I was beginning to feel like it would never happen again!

I swear… Every runner around here waits till I’m out driving and then goes out for their run because I see them all, shorts, shoes, water bottles and headphones, galloping energetically over pavement and grass trails, happy and free! Well , good for you guys, I guess … . Hope to join you soon.

Noise in my head
When I slipped uptown this morning, I noticed the car radio was on a country station (thanks, Huz). I was somewhat preoccupied so I left it. As luck would have it, someone phoned in on their request line and asked for a Mickey Gilley song so now I have “Roooomful of Roses” running around in my head and I can’t get it out. One way to get rid of it is to listen to Raffi sing...

New foods, new exercise program
Four years ago today, June 1, 2008, I stopped dieting and started running. I’ve been eating clean for the most part since then, with the odd digression shall we say. My weight has fluctuated four or five pounds either way, between 130 and 140. Except for lately. It has crept up oh so slowly, and now it fluctuates between 135 and 145. Come to think of it, it doesn’t fluctuate; it sits...
